ClinCheck is Align Technology's proprietary treatment planning software. It's the digital engine behind every Invisalign case worldwide.
Here's what happens: after your initial consultation, I take a 3D digital scan of your teeth using an iTero scanner. No messy putty impressions – just a wand that passes over your teeth and produces an exact digital replica of your mouth in minutes.
That 3D model is then uploaded into ClinCheck, where I design your treatment plan. This isn't a quick automated process – it's where the specialist's expertise matters most. I plot every tooth movement: which teeth need to move, in what direction, by how many millimetres, in what sequence. I position attachments (small tooth-coloured grips bonded to specific teeth for extra control). I plan interproximal reduction if needed. I stage the movements so that forces are applied efficiently and predictably.
The result is a complete 3D animation showing your teeth moving from start to finish – every stage, every angle.
When I present your ClinCheck, you'll see:
the digital model rotates so you can see them from every angle: front, side, top, bottom. Many patients are surprised by what their bite actually looks like from angles they've never seen.
a step-by-step animation showing each tooth shifting into its final position. You can watch your crowding resolve, gaps close, bite correct, and teeth align – all before a single aligner is made.
what your smile is projected to look like at the end of treatment. Front view, side view, with bite analysis overlaid.
This is the moment I enjoy most in the consultation process. I've seen patients tear up seeing their projected smile. I've watched parents who were sceptical about Invisalign change their mind on the spot. For adults who've spent decades hiding their smile, seeing what's possible is often the moment they decide to commit.
I want to be clear about something: the ClinCheck simulation is not a marketing gimmick. It's a clinical instrument.
The simulation is the treatment plan. Every aligner in your series is manufactured directly from the ClinCheck design. If the plan is brilliant, the aligners will deliver a brilliant result. If the plan is mediocre, the aligners will deliver a mediocre result – regardless of the plastic quality.
This is why provider experience matters so much. Align Technology provides an initial ClinCheck setup based on the scan, but an experienced provider rarely accepts it without significant modification. I typically revise a ClinCheck three to five times before approving it – adjusting tooth positions, refining staging, adding or repositioning attachments, and ensuring the movements are biomechanically achievable.
Two providers looking at the same 3D scan can design very different ClinCheck plans. The one with more experience – who has seen more variations, managed more complications, and refined more plans – will produce a plan that's more realistic, more efficient, and more likely to deliver the projected result without extensive refinements.
Here's something patients find interesting: ClinCheck planning doesn't happen chairside in the clinic. I design treatment plans wherever I am – at my desk, in airports, in hotel rooms during conference travel.
There's a running joke in my practice about "ClinCheck and coffee" – because that's genuinely how many treatment plans come together. A quiet hour, a coffee, and careful attention to the digital model on screen. It's painstaking work – each case takes considerable time – but it's the foundation of every successful Invisalign outcome.
Behind every confident smile is a quiet moment of planning that the patient never sees.
I believe in transparency, so I should note what ClinCheck doesn't do:
The simulation shows the projected outcome based on ideal aligner wear and biological response. In practice, some teeth may move slightly differently than planned – which is why refinement aligners exist. Think of ClinCheck as the architectural blueprint: the finished building follows it closely, but minor adjustments are made during construction.
The simulation moves teeth, not lips and cheeks. Your smile will look different in real life than in the digital model because your lips frame your teeth differently. Generally, the real-life result looks better than the simulation because the natural framing of your lips adds warmth that a digital model lacks.
A simulation can show teeth in a beautiful final position that's biomechanically unrealistic or unstable. An experienced provider designs within the limits of what's actually achievable, not just what looks good on screen.
If you're considering Invisalign at any clinic, ask to see your ClinCheck simulation before committing to treatment. Any Invisalign provider can generate one – it's part of the system.
At Wassan, we offer complimentary smile simulations during our periodic Invisalign Open Days and Smile Fest events. These events include a free iTero scan and a ClinCheck preview, with no obligation to proceed. It's an opportunity to see what's possible for your specific teeth before making any decisions.
Even outside these events, the smile simulation is part of every standard Invisalign consultation at Wassan. I want you to see what I'm planning before we start – because an informed patient is the best kind of patient.
If you've been thinking about straightening your teeth but haven't taken the first step, the simulation is a low-pressure way to explore the possibility. You don't need to commit to anything – you just need to show up, let us scan your teeth, and see the result.
Sometimes the simulation confirms what you hoped. Sometimes it shows you something you didn't expect was possible. Either way, you leave with more information than you walked in with. And that's always a good starting point.
